THE POSITION This is a continues recruitment. Applications will be reviewed dailyThe City of Carson is seeking eligible candidates for the position of Pool Maintenance Specialist. This position oversees the City pools and fountains (currently 10 locations). The ideal candidate must possess ability to multi-task and provide excellent customer service to both internal and external clients, as well as experience responding to emergencies as needed. In addition, the ideal candidate must have the ability to work independently (with limited supervision), take initiative and be proactive in addressing the changing needs within the work environment. CURRENT VACANCY INFORMATION : There is one current full-time vacancy, with a 4/10 work schedule (Monday to Thursday, 6:00 am to 4:30 pm, with half an hour unpaid meal/lunch break). The resultant eligibility list will be good for an entire year, and may be used to fill other vacancies within the same classification.REQUIRED DOCUMENTS : --- Resume--- Proof of all certificates claimed on the job application must be provided with the job application (attached virtually) or prior to participating in the selection interviewJob Summary:Under general supervision, maintains balanced water chemistry, maintains and repairs a variety of mechanical equipment and structures related to several wading pools, fountains and municipal swimming pools including spray features and waterslides; and performs other related duties as required. ESSENTIAL DUTIES (These functions are representative and may not be present in all positions in the class. Management reserves the right to add, modify, change or rescind related duties and work assignments.) --- Operates, maintains, backwashes, and performs annual service on filters for swimming pools; maintains water treatment, heating, and pumping equipment including chemical feed automation equipment for swimming pools, spray features and waterslides.--- Tests and adjusts water chemistry to meet health department standards for oxidation and sanitation, and ensures water clarity. Maintains chemical balance to prevent corrosion and scaling of equipment.--- Tests and performs preventive maintenance and repairs on all equipment and structures including pumps, suction lines, pipes, hoses, connectors, drains, piping balance tanks, valves, skimmer baskets, flow and control switches, gauges, chemical automation equipment, surge pits, gutters, pools, pool lights, decks, spray features, waterslides, and safety equipment.--- Drains pools when necessary to complete pool repairs; makes and/or coordinates repairs on facilities including tiles, line hoses, valves, benches, and safety equipment, lifeguard towers, diving boards, and related equipment and surfaces in and around the pools.--- Trains city staff on water chemistry and sanitation.--- Protects all piping and pumps from freezing during winter period. Installs and removes winterized pool covers where applicable.--- Monitors chemical supplies and organizes ordering and delivery to maintain supply.--- Inspects and assures appearance of the general pool area, pumproom, waterslides and spray features to assure there are no health or safety hazards to users. Installs and maintains necessary signage. Ensures code compliance of facility.--- Checks and interprets gauges, flow meters and monitoring equipment for operational efficiency and makes necessary adjustments.--- Performs general maintenance and custodial care to pool, equipment and facilities.--- Monitors, maintains and performs preventative maintenance and repairs to City fountains and wading pools. Maintains water chemistry and equipment to ensure water clarity, code compliance, equipment longevity and effective functioning of fountains and wading pools.--- Performs related duties as required.QUALIFICATIONS Qualification Guidelines:A typical way to obtain the requisite qualifications to perform the duties of this class is as follows: Education and/or Experience:High school graduate or GED equivalent and four (4) years of maintenance experience in the operation and maintenance of commercial swimming pools. Experience and/or education in a related field may be substituted on a year for year basis. Knowledge of:--- Methods, chemistry, materials and equipment involved in the operation of community swimming pools and waterslides.--- Current codes and practices established by health and building codes, government agencies, state and national aquatic agencies, and any applicable governing bodies.--- Practices of operation and preventative maintenance for pools, waterslides, fountains and associated equipment and structures.--- General maintenance and custodial care standards for facilities and equipment.--- Safety practices related to pool maintenance, including handling, use and storage of hazardous materials. Skill and Ability to:--- Operate and maintain pools in accordance with prescribed standards; respond to emergencies.--- Perform normal pool cleaning services and cleaning of pool equipment and pump room, waterslides and fountains.--- Carry out oral and written instructions; maintain routine records.--- Enforce swimming pool maintenance and safety standards.--- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, fellow employees, and the public. License and Certificates:--- Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license. Employees in this classification will be enrolled in the Department of Motor vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice program, which confirms possession of a valid driver's license and reflects the driving record.--- Current Los Angeles County Department of Health Swimming Pool Technician certification at time of application.--- Certified Pool Operator or Aquatic Facility Operator certificate (certification must be nationally recognized) issued by a recognized course provider within six months of employment.WORKING CONDITIONS Employee accommodations for physical and mental disabilities will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Positions in this class normally: --- Require the mobility to stand, stoop, reach and bend.--- Require mobility of arms to reach and dexterity of hands to grasp and manipulate small objects.--- Require the ability to stand for long periods.--- Require the ability to walk long distances.--- Require the ability to handle and work with hazardous chemicals.--- Perform lifting, pushing and/or pulling which does not exceed 100 pounds and is an infrequent aspect of the job.--- May be required to use city or personal vehicle in the course of employment.--- May be required to work in inclement weather without effective protection from the sun.--- May be required to work evenings, or weekends.RECRUITMENT PROCESS Applications will be screened and evaluated for relevant training and experience. Passing any/all of the examination sections does not guarantee an invitation to the selection interview. The Human Resources Department reserves the right to invite those amongst the highest scoring to the next phase of the recruitment.
