What you'll do:

As a Sheet Metal Design Engineer for our Royal Truck Body division based in Carson, CA, you will be at the forefront of translating customer needs into practical design engineering solutions.

In this role, you will be challenged with developing new design concepts (including an integrated tailgate camera) and evaluating them against competitors, building a prototype, and testing functionality and durability.

You will be involved with creating product drawings, comprehensive drawing packages, and driving agreements to implementation. Additionally, you will support production for the first builds and assist the planning team with the transition to production (old vs new).

  • Providing accurate, timely, and cost-effective engineering solutions for our customers
  • Translating customer requirements into engineering specifications through calculations and layouts
  • Collaborating with analysis resources to generate knowledge to make informed decisions
  • Driving the engineering change management process, including creating ECRs, managing the ECR approval process, and issuing ECNs with effective dates and material disposition
  • Overseeing product attributes including Quality (function of components/systems under conditions of customer usage), Manufacturability (cutting, bending, welding, fixturing), Assemble ability (fit of interfacing components, assembly tool access), and Product cost (material choice, prescribed manufacturing processes)
  • Creating solid models and drawings to achieve defined product attributes
  • Managing Engineering Bill of Materials
  • Defining and executing validation plans to assure product quality
  • Identifying opportunities to improve the financial performance of projects through product cost optimization
  • Designing manufacturing aids, fixtures, and tooling
  • Benchmarking competitive products to compare product attributes
  • Supporting the NPI (New Product Introduction) process
  • Creating and maintaining engineering specifications with a focus on continuous improvement
  • Collaborating with Operations in the development of standard work for production associates
  • Ensuring your projects are delivered in line with expectations for cost, quality, and timing

    What you need to be successful:

    • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology
    • 3+ years of experience in the design and development of on-highway, heavy truck, specialty, or automotive vehicles
    • Expert proficiency in Solidworks design software
    • A solid track record of designing and manufacturing sheet metal products, including tolerance design and ANSI-Y14.5 Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing
    • Manufacturing experience including a deep understanding of manufacturing tools and processes such as laser cutting, press brakes and mig welding
    • Familiarity with tolerance design and tolerance analysis and proficiency in Microsoft Office
    • Demonstrated project delivery from concept through production
    • Willing to travel up to 25% domestically to other Shyft facilities
      What Makes You Stand Out
      • Bachelor's or master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace
      • Familiarity with SolidWorks Analysis software
      • Expertise with AIAG Advanced Product Quality Planning (DFMEA, DVP, Process Flow, PFMEA, Control Plan)
      • Knowledge of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS)
