Position Information

This is a full-time, emergency hire (temporary) position.

Special Working Conditions: Occasional weekend and after hours work.

Conditions of Employment

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. The person holding this position is considered a `mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

Application Deadline & Salary Information

Salary is commensurate with experience.

The salary range for this classification is: minimum $4,691 - maximum $6,683.

Major Duties

Under the general direction of the Director, University Advisement Center, the incumbent provides academic advisement and information on University policies, procedures and graduation requirements to lower division, undergraduate, college specific population by utilizing an advanced, developmental, problem solving approach, rather than a prescriptive application, to support student in retention, closing the achievement gap, and degree completion. Additionally, the incumbent oversees and advises a college based pre-major caseload of students, provides significant and frequent advising opportunities, makes decisions in individual cases to resolve student problem within established parameters, regulations, and guidelines, tracking each student cohort thereafter to ensure efficient degree completion. Furthermore, the incumbent will collaborate with other UAC advisors and faculty to plan, organize, and coordinate-based interactive workshops specifically designed to support first year and transfer student cohorts; administer evaluations to each student to ensure Student Advising Learning Outcomes are achieved; implement evidence-based, best practice interventions to promote student personal, professional and academic success; collaborate closely with the Retention Specialists to address identified student challenges, using a preventative approach in documenting and solving problems impacting retention; maintain a daily database of student supported, challenges experienced, and overall outcomes; in collaboration with the College Specialist present information to the Director of University Advisement weekly. The academic advisor, DHFYE/DHTLC will periodically serve as Center Liaison/Representative at community and campus events, which will include developing and personally delivering information to various university programs designed to enhance student growth and development.


Required Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related.

Required Experience: Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. One year in the program area to which assigned may be preferred but is not required.

A masters degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.

Thorough knowledge of:
-- Basic principles of individuals and group behaviors;
- Research and observation techniques for the purpose of recording, classifying, and interpreting information;
- Working knowledge of the techniques and methods of interviewing;
- Familiarity with organizational structures and personnel issues.

Ability to
- Work with a variety of professional staff, faculty, and students to carry out complex assignments without detailed instructions;
- Carry out day-today assignment without immediate directions.
- Independently plan work, take action, and assist students in solving problems.
- Use advanced statistics and research methods to collect, records, and interpret data as it relates to the UAC, advising methods, and the student population;
- Use judgment within the area of their expertise to creatively utilize existing procedures and to recommend solutions to problems for which precedents may not exist;
- Design, establish, and sustain new programs or initiatives.
- Using a personal computer to develop and maintain files.
- Utilizing PeopleSoft information systems to evaluate student success and/or roadblocks.
- Utilizing computer based and interview information to accurately advise students.
- Utilizing advising contracts and petitions;
- Analyzing and addressing complex academic needs of students.
- Working with a culturally diverse student population as well as awareness of the needs of under-represented, non-traditional, and other student groups.

Classroom presentation experience with fairly large groups of young adults; experience in training others; excellent critical thinking skills, communication, and interpersonal skills.

The position activities may require the use of the following equipment, machinery, tools,
vehicles or office equipment: Personal computer desktop and/or laptop; printer; facsimiles; copy machine.


40% - Provides academic advisement and information on University policy, procedures, and graduation requirements to the undergraduate first year and transfer student population. Support students in timely degree completion. Provides information related to student aptitudes, interests, and abilities to ensure proficiency in class level Student Advising Learning Outcomes. Supports a caseload of undergraduate first year and transfer students by providing clear action steps for degree completion.

30% - Leads the development of programs and services that focus on growth mindset and belongingness for first year and transfer students. Organizes and coordinates co-curricular programs to support first year and transfer students' successful transition to CSU DH. Coordinates recruitment and certified training of Student Success Peer Coach Program. In addition, coordinate and oversee the exit interview process for departing students as well as the leave of absence process. Serves as advisor to the DHFYE/DHTLC Student Success Peer Coaches. Assists in the coordination of communication updates on print and digital mediums (emails, website, brochures, etc). Provides support for students experiencing academic, personal, economic, and social crises, which may impact academic performance, and assist with student access with counseling services and other on campus support networks. Collaborates with Faculty/Directors of First Year Experience and Transfer Student Experience/Career Readiness for programs, training and development of peer coaches.

15% - Support students in navigating their academic plan while connecting them to the on-campus support network. Provides feedback on student concerns and needs; and stays up to date on policy updates and procedures affecting the population. Assists in the coordination of communication updates on print and digital mediums (emails, website, brochures, etc).

10% - Assists in the collection and organization of data to develop reports and executive summaries. Assists in maintaining student advising records through EAB/TSC. Keep accurate reports of student advising sessions. Provides Director with weekly updates on progress for semester and year end reports. Collects data to be used for reports and executive summaries under direct supervision of the Director.

5% - Other duties as assigned.
