The Department of Social Work at California State University Dominguez Hills invites applications for a Temporary full-time Lecturer position at the rank of Lecturer B, 12-month with the appointment starting in Fall 2020 .

Department of Social Work

The Department of Social Work Program at California State University, Dominguez Hills is strategically located to focus on the diverse social service needs and problems particular to the South Bay area of Los Angeles County, a large metropolitan area, populated by a wide range of socially and culturally diverse people. The program will prepare social work students for contextually competent social work practice, inclusive of issues of race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, class, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, immigration status, age, abilities, religion, and the effects of bias, prejudice and institutionalized racism and other forms of oppression. These issues and concerns often obscure helping efforts if they are not appropriately recognized and dealt with in practice and in social policy development and implementation. Thus, the program aims at increasing students' understanding of the underlying causes resulting from intersecting effects of prejudice, discrimination, and stereotyping and teaches ways of identifying strategies and interventions for addressing these concerns and problems in social work practice.

The CSUDH MSW Program is dedicated to the pursuit of a more just, global society through education, scholarship, research, and community practice addressing societal dynamics stemming from the intersection of race/ethnicity, culture, gender, immigration and socio-economic status, and membership in other categories historically subjected to oppression, discrimination, and indifference. Located in a diverse, complex urban setting, the program prepares Master level social workers to professionally deliver social work practice grounded in critical theoretical approaches that address oppression and structural inequality to enhance the well-being of individuals, families, and communities.

The Position

The Director of Social Work Field Education provides leadership for the field education program. This is a key position in the Department collaborating and consulting with the Chair and social work faculty. The incumbent is responsible for overseeing the planning, implementation and evaluation of all components of field education for the MSW program. Reporting to the Director/Chair of the Social Work Department, this position requires someone who is committed to social work practice and education that is justice and strengths-based, culturally humble, community-based, and inter-professionally collaborative. Since the program is undergirded by a Critical Race Theory approach to social work, familiarity with this and similar theoretical frameworks that critique structural forms of oppression is important. In keeping with the Council on Social Work Education's (CSWE) emphasis on competency-based education and declaration of field education as the signature pedagogy of the social work profession, the Director has critical leadership responsibilities and serves as a key member of the Social Work Faculty.

Responsibilities

The Director is expected to oversee the learning experiences of all MSW students throughout the field education process as needed to support students' growth and development as justice-based social work practitioners. The responsibilities for the position include: recruitment, management and support of field agency placements and field liaisons; providing regular programs of orientation and training to students, field instructors, and faculty liaisons with the purpose of enhancing the quality of student supervision and learning experience. Maintains partnership agreements with field agencies; oversees web-based field database system to manage files for students and practicum sites; collaborates with other school of social work field education administrators and faculty. Represents the Department's Field Education program to the community and attends meetings in the neighborhoods surrounding the University. Advise students and faculty concerning field education issues; work collaboratively with faculty colleagues on curriculum issues. Maintains and updates Field Education Manual and related materials. The Field Director is responsible for ensuring compliance with CSWE's field-related standards and competencies.

The Director of Social Work Field Education is also expected to be well-engaged in the community in order to stay current with needs and priorities, develop relevant partnerships, and maintain field practicum sites and relationships that meet the needs of the communities in the greater Los Angeles area. The Director will work closely with the Assistant Director of Social Work Field Education and Field Education Coordinator, along with other Department staff and faculty.

Assists in the operations of Department. Carries out assignments or other responsibilities assigned by the Department Chair.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

Applicants must have experience in teaching and working with colleagues from diverse age, socioeconomic, cultural, and academic backgrounds

An MSW from an accredited program and a minimum of five years of professional experience

Familiarity with Critical Race Theory and/or theoretical models that address racism, sexism, heterosexism and other forms of oppression

Demonstrated commitment to social justice-based practice in an urban diverse environment

A demonstrated evidence of leadership and management in social work field education, field instruction and supervision of students in field placements

Well-developed organizational skills; ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks

Ability to demonstrate sound judgment and initiative in solving problems

A demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a variety of communities and community partners

Have strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate, interact and lead various levels of staff, sound professional judgment, and excellent problem solving and mediation skills

Strong teaching ability

Exemplary written and oral communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

Extensive experience in field instruction and field education in academic settings

Demonstrated knowledge and implementation of Critical Race Theory in practice and professional settings

Knowledge of CSWE Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards related to program evaluation

Employment Requirement - Background Check

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.
